Average Dan the Great Dane Sketch

This is Average Dan.

He's a Great Dane, but unlike that name,
He's actually rather plain.

** EDIT: The above were simply three lines that spontaneously came to me when I was uploading. But since then, I've been inspired to take these animals and craft little poems for them based on what they tell me. Here's my second stab at this one for "Average Dan"

Dan was a Dane but thought himself plain
Not like the others who shared the same name

Stuck in a rut and feeling quite low
A good boy he was if only he'd know.

  1. Aaaawww.
    He looks above
    Average to me.
    Rather handsome.
    Fine.
    Good dog.
    Argh.
    My brain is frozen,
    I cannot rhyme
    Which is just fine.
    The end.
    :)

    1. Your poem makes me think of the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," Ces. I love it, and thanks for thinking of Dan as a good boy instead of average :)

    1. Thanks, Estevao. I'm still trying to see what more I can add with this style, so it's a work in progress.

  6. Hmmm, yes...average.... In the land of Super Dogs, maybe! Just look at that muzzle. Plenty o' real estate for smooches! He's a great Dan, alright.

  7. Dan the Dane,
    was his name,
    and barkin' loud,
    was his game.

    Some would claim,
    that big Dan's aim,
    was bite and maim.
    But that's a shame,
    'cause Dan is tame!

  8. You could have a whole family. So-so, mediocre, and fair.

  9. He's wonderful, Mauricio! I lOVE the linework/strokes..the gestural quality in this is fantastic. I wonder..is he a part of your new book? Gosh, it's gonna be amazing I just know it. Yes, you are so true regarding Georgia Deaver's line and strokes..she has left behind an amazing legacy that will continue to inspire. Thanks so much for stopping by! AND....drumroll please...HA! I just submitted my book dummy to the SCBWI Don Freeman grant for 2013. I know it's a complete work-in-progress but for now, I am happy that we made the deadline. Whew! Have a super rest of the week!!

    1. That's great! Congrats on finishing it! I also applied to the same grant, so I hope we both get something. And no, this doggie isn't part of my book. He's just an extension of the style I've been playing with, as is the new elephant. I'll be posting updates on my book soon :)
